Portsmouth, NH (Slow Food Seacoast)
January 26, 2009 -- Slow Food Seacoast will be hosting farms from the
Seacoast area at the Levenson Room, Portsmouth Public Library on Saturday,
February 14, from 10am-1pm. The public will have the opportunity
to meet farms, ask questions about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA),
and get information about buying shares in a local farm’s crops for
the 2009 summer/fall season. This is the 2nd annual
event.
Community Supported Agriculture
(CSA) allows customers to buy shares in one season's crops at a local
farm. In return, customers receive fresh, locally grown produce
once a week during the growing season. By providing mutual support,
the growers and customers make the farm part of the community.
Share-holders cover anticipated costs of the operation of the farm.
In return they receive a portion of the farm’s crops through the growing
season. Farmers and share-holders share in the risks of farming
(such as poor yields due to inclement weather or pests) allowing the
farmer greater financial stability. By investing, literally, in local
agriculture, consumers can directly support the presence of small, local
farms on the Seacoast.
The farms attending the CSA
Fair include (but are not limited to): Andy’s Greens of York, ME,
Back River Farm of Dover, NH, Heron Pond Farm of So. Hampton, NH, Meadow’s
Mirth of Stratham, NH, Newfields’ Own Produce of Newfields, NH, Stone
Wall Farm of Madbury, NH, Sustainable Farm Products of Strafford, NH,
and Wake Robin Farm of Stratham, NH.
This will be a great event
for the public to learn about Community Supported Agriculture, and for
farmers to sell shares. Admission to this event is free.
Light refreshments will be provided by Slow Food Seacoast.
