Stop by the Exeter and Portsmouth Farmers’ Markets this week for everything you need to get your garden started. From seedlings and garden transplants to compost, an array of market vendors make it easy to start your garden right.

Market visitors will have their selection of cold and warm season seedlings including watermelons, peppers, squash, cucumbers and tomatoes. New Roots Farm offers over 20 varieties of tomatoes, many different eggplant and pepper varieties, and a broad selection of culinary herb seedlings at both the Exeter and Portsmouth Markets.

Seedlings from Black Kettle Farm

Black Kettle Farm will be at the Portsmouth Farmers’ Market with loads of vegetables ready to go right into the ground. They plan to have plenty of kale, chard and specialty greens available among many varieties of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs, zucchini, and sweet peppers.

Riverslea Farm is providing “food for your garden” with fresh compost especially for Get Your Garden Started Days at both markets.

And don’t forget to pick up some treats for that boost of energy you’ll need while gardening, like maple candy and maple coated pecans from Anderson’s Mini-Maples at the Exeter Market.

Even if you don’t have time to plant your garden this week, it’s still a great time to pick up everything you’ll need, and these are just a few examples of what you’ll find at market. Seedlings will last a few weeks in their pots until you’re ready but they’ll be scooped up fast on market day, so plan to arrive early for the best selection!

Support the Exeter Congregational Church with a donation of seedlings to help get their garden started. Thursday, the church will be at the Exeter Farmers’ Market hoping to collect enough transplants for their second year of production.

Church youth started the garden last year during a hunger awareness program. Their raised-bed garden helped the Feed My Lambs food pantry provides fresh produce all summer long to 25 families.

The church will be at the Exeter Farmers’ Market this week collecting seedling donations to plant on Saturday during their youth garden raising. This year, a group of 25 church youth are involved, and will be adding a rain-barrel water collection and irrigation system to water the gardens all summer!
